Outdoor Surveillance Cameras

Outdoor surveillance cameras are designed for monitoring and recording activities that take place outside, such as yards, parking lots, building entrances and other outdoor areas. They are built to withstand different weather conditions and to provide optimal performance regardless of the weather.

What features do the best outdoor video surveillance cameras have?

The essential features of outdoor surveillance cameras are:

Resistance to weather conditions

Outdoor cameras must withstand water, dust and extreme temperatures. They usually have a high IP protection rating, such as IP66 or IP67, in order to resist harsh weather conditions. The IP rating refers to two basic components: protection against solid particles, represented by the first digit and ranging from 0 to 6, and protection against liquids, represented by the second digit and ranging from 0 to 9. The higher the number, the better the device is protected against natural elements.

Good video resolution

Camera resolution is important, and the higher it is, the more details the camera will capture. This feature can be extremely useful when investigating incidents. HD resolution, also known as 720p, or Full HD resolution, also known as 1080p, can provide clear images, while models with higher resolutions, such as 2K or 4K, will offer finer details.

Night visibility

There are various technologies that help cameras capture images during the night. As a reference, many cameras provide black-and-white images at night, but there are also cameras that can produce color images even in nighttime conditions.

Motion detection

A surveillance camera with motion detection capability will detect movement within its field of view, meaning that constant monitoring of the video stream is no longer necessary. This reduces storage requirements and energy consumption. Recording will only start when motion is detected. Moving objects, lights from passing cars, branches moved by the wind or wild animals can trigger false alarms, but there are cameras with intelligent functions that do not trigger alerts for this type of movement.

Field of view

Outdoor areas that require surveillance are usually larger and need a wide field of view for efficient monitoring. Rotating surveillance cameras and panoramic cameras with multiple lenses are ideal choices for large areas. PTZ cameras, meaning pan-tilt-zoom cameras, allow the monitoring of large areas and remote zooming.

Zoom lenses

Outdoor surveillance cameras do not always have zoom lenses, but many offer digital zoom functions. Some cameras provide 8x digital zoom. However, this is not functional enough for cameras that need to monitor long distances, such as border control, port surveillance, city surveillance, forest surveillance or large parking lots. There are cameras with lenses capable of performing up to 80x zoom.

It is important to note that zooming in reduces the field of view, which can affect image resolution.

Power supply

Depending on the size of the surveillance application, you can choose between wired surveillance cameras, battery-powered cameras or solar-powered cameras. Powering outdoor surveillance cameras can be complicated and expensive, especially for large-scale projects. Where possible, you can choose cameras with batteries or solar panels, or surveillance cameras with PoE, meaning Power over Ethernet, which do not require a separate power supply.

Wired or wireless

Choose the cameras according to your project. For simpler applications, such as home surveillance or monitoring smaller areas, you can use wireless cameras that operate through Wi-Fi. These cameras offer high flexibility in terms of placement, allowing you to optimize the angle and field of view in order to record the most vulnerable points of the property.

Installing wireless surveillance cameras is usually cheaper than installing wired cameras, which often requires professional assistance.

Wireless surveillance cameras are not only easy to install, but also easy to maintain, with many of them being battery-powered. Many wireless surveillance cameras include smart functions and can be connected to the Wi-Fi network in order to be accessed in real time through apps on smart devices.

Audio communication functions

Outdoor surveillance cameras can include microphones and speakers to provide two-way audio communication between the user and the people within the camera’s range.

Remote access

Choose cameras that can be accessed remotely, so you can view recordings or the live stream from the outdoor camera through a mobile app or online platform.
